Profile Books, 288 pages, €14

One of the top writers of ghostly fiction of her generation, Susan Hill remains best known for her 1982 chiller The Woman in Black, which has had extended life as a successful West End production and a spooky film starring Daniel Radcliffe.

Her latest book is a collection of short stories to put a shiver up your spine. They’re set in numerous locales and eras. In the title story, a paranormal detective recounts his most infamous case, another is about a mysterious new office worker who is accompanied by lingering scent of decay while yet another story concerns three medical students and the unholy pact they make that will have consequences that will chase one of them to his grave.
