Turlough Daly
Age 36, from Kilbrittain, Cork. POSITION: Senior accountant with Voxpro I became an accountant because it would give me skills to contribute to a company’s story.
I studied CPA at the College of Commerce and Griffith College in Cork and trained in Moore Stephens Nathans, also in Cork. It is challenging to get qualified, and there’s no point in saying otherwise. You have to work hard. However, college is a great experience and accountancy is a fantastic qualification to come away with.
When I finished my training contract in 2007, I joined SouthWestern, a business process outsourcing company in Clonakilty. I worked as financial accountant for the Sunday World, which involved regular trips to Dublin as I worked directly with the newspaper’s financial director. In 2012, I joined Vearsa, a tech start-up that works with the book publishing industry. It opened an office in New York and I spent a week there, which was great. My financial controller role included raising funding for the company to support its growth, and that is a very rewarding achievement to date.
I have just joined Voxpro, a business process outsourcing company that provides services to the likes of Google, Stripe and AirBNB. I will be focusing on budgeting/forecasting for the business and supporting other teams in reporting, planning and pricing.
I really enjoy my career and have made great friends and great connections because of what I do. I would encourage people to go for this qualification if they are interested in finance or business, as it opens up many career paths to you.
