Gardaí appeal for witnesses as two men killed in crashes

- Conor Feehan

GARDAÍ are investigating if weather and road conditions were a factor in the death of aman in his 30s in a single-vehicle crash on the outskirts of the village of Ballivor, Co Meath.

They are appealing for witnesses to the crash, in which local man Philly Colvin (33) was killed.

The civil-engineering company worker’s car left the Raharney Road (R156) and crashed into a tree.

A passer-by spotted the car at 4am and raised the alarm but it was unclear when the crash had actually happened.

The body was removed to Our Lady’s Hospital, Navan, for a post-mortem examination.

Sources locally said there had been traffic on the road on Saturday and it was passable, so it was unclear if the weather was a factor.

In a separate incident, a former president of the Golfing Union of Ireland (GUI) and well-known Boyle businessman lost his life in a road crash in north Roscommon on Saturday.

Fred Perry (84) opened one of the very first supermarkets in Boyle.

Gardaí are continuing their investigation after the car he was driving struck a wall at around 10am on the Old Carrick road.
