Varadkar under fire over his criticism of ‘trivial’ new s coverage

- Shona Murray

TAOISEACH Leo Varadkar is under fire after reports he criticised the Irish media for its ‘trivial’ coverage of news.

He made the comments on Monday during a private, invite-only event with a small number of young irish entrepreneurs.

He was reported to have said that he agreed with Donald Trump on some of his points when it came to the press and its reluctance to cover matters of ‘substance’; preferring instead to engage in idle gossip in the corridors of Leinster House. He also lamented the ratio of political correspondents to TDs.

He made the comments on a three-day visit to New York where he represented Ireland at the UN. He was accompanied by eight political correspondents.
