I was for Brexit but want a new vote

-

■ I agree with almost all of Michael Dryhurst’s letter (‘Sad betrayal of Churchill’s vision,’ July 4).

I voted for Brexit in June 2016 but don’t trust Theresa May to deliver it.

There should be another referendum on the issue, a straight In/Out to allow all those too young to vote two years ago, the ‘Remainers’ and ‘change of hearts’ a final decision on this all-important issue.

As for Winston Churchill, whatever his thoughts were on a ‘united’ Europe, he was reluctant to grant India its independence.

World War II heralded the end of the British empire – not the charity of Churchill.

One cannot wish for Europe’s nations to be free yet hold down the legitimate aspirations for freedom of other countries.

As for Northern Ireland’s wish to remain in Europe, this can only be achieved by reuniting with the Republic of Ireland – a country with genuine democracy and an elected head of State – unlike the United Kingdom.

As for Michael Gove and Boris Johnson, all they care about is becoming prime minister, replacing May, and delivering their own shallow, respective agendas.

So desperate were they both to become prime minister in 2016 that both men scuppered the other’s chances. Dominic Shelmerdine London, UK
