-

IT’S Mother’s Day today and to celebrate we have asked some of our favourite Irish celebs to tell us what they love about theirs.

From Baz Ashmawy, who made an entire TV show about his mam, to broadcaster Dermot Whelan, whose mother is always setting off the smoke alarm, here’s why mammies are the best.

BAZ ASHMAWY – 50 WAYS TO KILL YOUR MAMMY STAR

Baz said: “It’s a thankless job being a mum so it’s nice to give them a nod of appreciation.

“I’ve been lucky with my mum, we’ve been though a lot over the years.

“There’s nothing we don’t share, No secrets.

“The worst thing about Irish mammies is their dreaded fear of their children getting a ‘chill’... like it was leprosy.

“They can also beat you with pretty much anything found in a kitchen from a broom to a kitchen roll.”

JENNY BUCKLEY – TV PRESENTER AND FASHION ICON

The gorgeous TV star plans on taking her mam Agnes and her mother-in-law Jean to Aqua restaurant in Howth, Dublin today.

She said: “My mother means the world to me, she’s an integral part of my life.

“From parenting advice to just lending an ear for me to vent she really is the most important person in my life.

“The best thing about having an Irish mammy is the fact she sees every obstacle as surmountable.

“There’s something about the saying, ‘sure it will be grand’ that definitely resonates.

“Also, in our family a strong cup of tea and a good chat can cure any (emotional) ailment.

“Her advice of ‘Don’t take things so seriously’ and ‘This too will pass’ are my mother’s favourite quotes... they always seem to work for me.

“I don’t like to focus on just the one day, I do bits throughout the year as a thank you to her for being so good to us. Last year we put together a video of Jude our little girl and she was thrilled with that.

DERMOT WHELAN – BROADCASTER TODAY FM

The Today FM broadcaster will spend Mother’s Day with his mam Eithne, watching episodes

of Midsomer Murders with tons of tea and biccies.

He said: “My mum is an amazing woman. It’s incredible no matter how old you get, a mammy hug still fixes everything.

“The best thing about having an Irish mammy is she’s constantly setting off the smoke alarm cooking sausages, never a dull breakfast in our house!

“The one bit of advice I always remember is she said, ‘If you’re going drinking for the love of God eat a banana’.”

DAVE MOORE – BROADCASTER TODAY FM

Dave admits his mam Myra means the world to him in a world gone mad.

He said: “You can always and I mean always get a cup of tea.

“The one bit of advice she gave me was get your education first David! She was right, I did, it was sound advice.

“For Mother’s Day this year, I’ve a few mammies to think about there. Mine, my wife’s and my kids’ Mammy!

“I usually buy my mam a book for Mother’s Day, it’s not the most original gift in the world but she devours them. “I’d say there are a million more special things she’s done for me before I can even think of one I’ve done for her but I think giving her four grandkids is the most special thing I can think of.”

IRELAND INTERNATIONAL RUGBY STAR SOPHIE SPENCE

Sophie has had a busy time lately, the Irish star is top of her game being nominated for World Rugby player 2015 and fresh from the Six Nations she’s dying to spend quality time with her mam Myrtle Spence.

She said: “My mam means the world to me, she is my rock.

“She is extremely supportive and is there for me in whatever I do.

TV3 6 O’CLOCK HOST AND TODAY FM STAR MUIREANN O’CONNELL

The TV3 star says her mam Marie is not sentimental so a hug and a card is sure to overwhelm her on her big day.

She said: “Marie is one of the most important people in my life.

“Talking to her makes me happy instantly. Her outlook on life and advice makes me cop on when I’ve gotten myself worked up over something that’s insignificant in the long run.

“Her greatest bit of advice was read the paper, to learn about people and places in the world that are different from yourself.”
