Trib­utes af­ter Ir­ish­woman dies climb­ing Mt Kil­i­man­jaro in char­ity trek

Body­builder’s mis­sion for late father

TRIB­UTES have poured in for an Ir­ish­woman who died in Tan­za­nia while climb­ing Mount Kil­i­man­jaro.

It is be­lieved body­builder Ma­jella Duffy, from Cork, be­came ill around 4,000m into her climb on Fri­day.

She had trav­elled to the African coun­try last Satur­day to scale the moun­tain in mem­ory of her late father.

The 35-year-old had raised more than €8,000 for the Ir­ish Heart Foun­da­tion at the time of her death.

Trib­utes flooded in yes­ter­day with one pal say­ing: “I’m ac­tu­ally in shock af­ter just hear­ing the heart-break­ing news.

“RIP Ma­jella Duffy, ab­so­lute beauty in­side and out.

“Thoughts are with your loved ones tonight xxxxxxxx.”

Fel­low body­builder Car­rie-ann Crow­ley added: “Very sad­dened to hear of the tragic pass­ing of Ma­jella Duffy. I was lucky enough to share the stage with this lady twice.

“Beau­ti­ful girl and ab­so­lutely fab­u­lous physique.

“So so sad. Thoughts and con­do­lences with her fam­ily and friends. Xx”

An­other touch­ing trib­ute read: “Deeply sad­dened to learn of the pass­ing of the beau­ti­ful Ma­jella Duffy.

“She was beau­ti­ful in­side and out – thought­ful, friendly, con­sid­er­ate, not a bad word could have been said about her.”

An­other friend said the pop­u­lar sportswoman was “too young to die”.

He added: “RIP Ma­jella Duffy. I got to know you briefly when you won your NIFMA World a cou­ple of years ago and

through Face­book chats, you seemed to be very nice and bub­bly and very car­ing lady. I hope God has great plans for you.”

Ad­ven­ture hol­i­day travel com­pany Earth’s Edge of­fered its con­do­lences to Ma­jella’s fam­ily.

A spokesman said: “A client of ours passed away on the 14th July 2017 at 8.15am lo­cal time while on Kil­i­man­jaro.

“Our thoughts and con­do­lences are with her fam­ily.

“We will pro­vide fur­ther in­for­ma­tion on this in­ci­dent in due course. James and all the team at Earth’s Edge.”

The De­part­ment of For­eign Af­fairs is pro­vid­ing con­sular as­sis­tance to the woman’s fam­ily.
