HOTEL INDIGO LEICESTER SQUARE

WHERE & WHY: Tucked away in the corner of the capital’s busiest and most vibrant square, Hotel Indigo mirrors the 1920s glamour of its cinematic surroundings. The bespoke rooms continue the theme with walls adorned with framed scripts and stage lighting hanging from rigging above the bed – and a black Bakelite phone. Gorgeous! There is a Nespresso machine and free snacks, fruit and soft drinks. Bathrooms are, spacious, ultra-sleek and modern. I was concerned the hotel might be noisy at night given my balcony overlooked the square itself, but the patio doors are as thick as a Bank of England vault door. It’s fabulous to sit out on the balcony and watch the world go by in the evening – and then shut the doors on everything but a slight hum from the outside.

ON THE MENU: Breakfast is served at the 7th floor. The Rooftop Bar spread and is a hearty affair offering a huge selection of cold buffet items on the bar and a decent menu of hot food and smoothies. Service is efficient but with a laid-back vibe. It isn’t included in the room price and is €17 for continental and €28 for full English. In the evening the restaurant is buzzing, as you would imagine for the location, but there are private tables towards the back. Compared to breakfast the evening menu is short and simple, offering classic fare with the occasional twist. Starters from €9, mains from €18. We had Thai mussels and sea bass, both very good.

WHILE YOU’RE THERE: You’re smack bang in the middle of the West End and in the perfect location for a trip to the theatre or cinema with literally dozens of venues in walking distance. You’re on the doorstep of Chinatown, Covent Garden and Oxford Street shopping. It’s a short walk to Trafalgar Square for the National Gallery.

WAKE-UP CALL: Rooms start at €220 up to €550 for a superior room with balcony.
