Southgate will snub big clubs

- BY STEVE BATES

ENGLAND are confident boss Gareth Southgate will snub any big-club job if he is headhunted after the World Cup.

Southgate’s stock has risen considerably after taking England into the semi-finals in Russia and, along with director of football Dan Ashworth, he has overseen a restructuring of the way the Three Lions approach major tournaments.

FA chiefs don’t believe Southgate will walk away after formulating a blueprint which can be rolled out across all levels of England’s teams.

Southgate’s calm, thoughtful style, strategy skills and ability to make tough decisions have been showcased in Russia.

They have left senior FA figures sure he will be on a few wish-lists – but they hope he is committed to taking England further, with his contract due to end after the European Championship in 2020.

The FA have the option to extend his deal – and that is an increasing possibility, with England just two wins from a World Cup triumph.
