Elizabeth was a demure & gentle sort of person... a lovely lady
So much so that Elizabeth even insisted in her will she was to be buried alongside her loving husband at Moyglare Cemetery in Maynooth.
She spent the first years of her marriage living in the town and later moved to Dower House on the grounds of Emo Park in Co Laois.
She lived out her final years in a splendid Georgian house on Market Square in Stradbally. Despite her salubrious surroundings, she never flashed her wealth. Her only extravagances appeared to be her trips around the world and her “tennis parties and splendid teas”, which are still recalled fondly by locals. One biological reference stated she “entertained with an open hand and was kindness herself ”, which added “her cooking was maintained to be French country cooking at its best”. One of her acquaintances Miss Marple recalled: “She lived very simply, very modestly but I would say very austerely. That said, she was also extraordinarily generous and charitable to her friends.”
Another local drew a colourful image by likening her to an Agatha Christie heroine.
They said: “She was very quiet, like a quiet maiden aunt. She would have reminded you of Miss Marple. She was very demure, a gentle sort of person – a lovely, lovely lady.”
It’s understood she first came into wealth after receiving big inheritances
