THE man stabbed to death by an Islamic State terrorist in Australia was trying to help his attacker, it emerged yesterday.

Coffee bar owner Sisto Malaspina, 74, thought Hassan Shire Ali’s pick-up truck had accidentally caught fire in Melbourne.

He was unaware the Somali-born 30-year-old had deliberately torched his vehicle in a bid to make gas cylinders explode.

Shire Ali stabbed Sisto outside his cafe and wounded two other men aged 26 and 58 before being shot by police.

Shire Ali’s Australian passport was cancelled in 2015 because he planned to travel to Syria.

But intelligence officials decided he posed no threat. Police said he had no direct link with IS.
