Drogheda to get a Fleadh song

Mid Louth Independent - - NEWS -

A PRIZE fund of €1,000 has been announced for a ‘Fleadh song’ for Drogheda, which will celebrate all that is great in the town and area, and mark the fact that Drogheda will host Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann in 2018.

Independent Cllr Frank Godfrey explained that he would love to see an iconic song for Drogheda embracing the history, the people, heritage, the Boyne and the Fleadh. ‘We have so many talented musicians and singers in this area who could write an amazing hit song on this theme. And the competition is not limited to Drogheda, but is open to all countrywide and worldwide!’

The song should reflect Drogheda life and heritage as well as the historic occasion of the Fleadh being held in the town for the first time. It should be catchy, and encourage people to sing along. It should contain words and music.

‘We don’t really have a song for Drogheda that’s well-known and sung everywhere,’ continued Cllr Godfrey.

Application forms will be available from Cllr Godfrey from October and should be submitted to him by the end of May 2018, along with a recording of the song.

It can be performed by individuals or a group.

There is no entrance fee for the Fleadh song competition.

A musical night will be held next summer to highlight the short-listed songs, which will be adjudicated by a panel of three judges.
