Labour includes Drogheda plan in budget proposal

SENATOR Ged Nash has confirmed that the Labour Party has included plans to extend the Living Cities initiative to Drogheda in its Alternative Budget proposals.

The Mayor of Drogheda Pio Smith nd Senator Nash have worked closely together to promote the extension of the targeted urban regeneration scheme to the town.

Senator Nash said, “Labour is the only party to have included this proposal in our costed pre-Budget alternative. The scheme currently applies to the much smaller town of Kilkenny and we will know in this week’s Budget if Fine Gael and the Independent Alliance will deliver for Drogheda on this important town centre regeneration initiative.

Mayor Pio Smith explained, “I have made this issue a priority since my election as Mayor. I have held a very successful public meeting to explain the benefits of this scheme to property owners, landlords and community groups and how our town centre could be transformed if the Living Cities initiative is extended to Drogheda.

“This focussed scheme provides incentives to owners and landlords of pre-1915 buildings to convert ‘over the shop’ space for residential purposes.

“It would help to resolve our housing crisis and would transform our historic town centre into a vibrant, 24-7 living area.”
