Walk and Talk event around Green Lanes and Do­mini­can Fri­ary

THE next Old Drogheda So­ci­ety Walk n talk will take place on Wed­nes­day July 11th next be­gin­ning at 7.30pm. Led by Com­mu­nity His­to­rian, Bren­dan Matthews, the Evening will be­gin in Bolton Square, lo­ca­tion of the weekly Satur­day morn­ing Mar­ket, where Bren­dan will talk about the old me­dieval in­dus­tries & trades that were res­i­dent here, along with the ori­gins of the mar­kets area.

The Walk n Talk will then pro­ceed through Green Lanes passed the site of the old 18th cen­tury Weavers Houses that once stood here. Bren­dan will then speak about the for­mer Trade Union Hall at the junc­tion of Green Lanes & Mag­da­lene Street and he will also out­line the tale of Ir­ish/Amer­i­can ex-Union Army Of­fi­cers who were reg­u­lar vis­i­tors to the Union Hall dur­ing the 1860`s. The Walk will then go on through Mag­da­lene Street, site of a hor­rific at­tack on a sol­dier’s wife in the early 19th cen­tury and the site of the old street wa­ter-pump that once stood here. The tour will then stop at the me­dieval ru­ins of the Do­mini­can Fri­ary and Mag­da­lene Tower where again Bren­dan will out­line the ori­gins & his­tory of the place.

The Walk n Talk will then head for Scar­let Street and ter­mi­nates at the old town Jail where Bren­dan will com­plete the evening by speak­ing about the jail and some of its for­mer in­mates.
