MEATH County Council has announced that €8,000 in funding has been made available for local groups for Christmas lighting.

After a discussion at the last area council meeting, it was agreed to give €1,750 to Duleek, Laytown/Bettystown, Slane and Julianstown to get €1,000.

Cllr Paddy Meade said that Lobinstown tidy towns had written to the council, seeking funding for lights.

Cllr Sharon Tolan felt that the funding should be allocated to the bigger areas and then look at other areas if money became available. ‘We should look at it for the future for Lobinstown and Donore,’ Cllr Stephen McKee added. Cllr Tom Kelly felt that funding should also be sourced for the annual sandcastle competition.
