Coursing cancelled after hares stolen

November 1979

-

About fifteen hares owned by Gorey Coursing Club disappeared from the club’s compound at the Showgrounds on Fort Road last Sunday night/Monday morning.

It is believed that the hares were stolen, and Gardai are investigating. There were ninenteen hares in the compound when they were checked on Sunday evening, but just four remained there on Monday.

As a result of the disappearance or theft, Gorey Coursing Club has been forced to cancel the meeting that was due to be held this week.

It is understood that live hares are fetching around £10 each on the Dublin ‘ black market’ and that this may have been a motive for theft of the hares.

Last year, an attempt was made to sabotage Gorey Coursing Club’s annual fixture, when broken glass was scattered across the coursing field. The discovery was made only two hours before the coursing was due to start. Three boxes full of glass were picked off the track before the sport eventually started.
