Michael pitches his way to another All-Ireland

- By SARA GAHAN

WEXFORD man Michael Redmond from the Ballagh has done it again, winning the All-Ireland Singles Division 1 for horse shoe pitching.

The event was held in the FCJ, Bunclody where Michael, who last won the title in 2005, competed against 40 other contestants from around the country.

Michael said it was ‘great to get the trophy back again as it is such an honour to win ‘.

‘ There were so many on the day of the competition. It started off difficult but the rounds got easier after that. In the semi-final I was actually playing against a man who had already beaten me a couple of weeks ago in another game. It really depends on the day how it goes for you.’

Michael has been pitching horseshoes since 1973 when he first joined the Unyoke club. He moved on to the Woodsmen club in Bunclody, where he still plays. The club previously won four All-Ireland titles in a row, in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015, while Michael and Paddy Connors also won the International Pairs in 2017.

In recognition of the club’s great achievements, Wexford County Council held a civic reception for the champions, presenting each with a certificate and a plaque. Michael has also won the County Singles Division 1 five times ,in 2005, 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2016.
