CELEBRITIES LINE OUT FOR GOOD CAUSE
FORMER Wexford hurling manager Liam Griffin experienced victory once again at the sixth annual Hurling for Cancer Research match in aid of the Irish Cancer Society. Organised by Olyegate horse trainer Jim Bolger the match is one of the highlights of the charity’s calendar of events and saw a record crowd of almost 4,000 descended on St. Conleth’s Park, Newbridge.
Jim Bolger’s Stars, managed by Liam Griffin and ably assisted by Clare legend and current Wexford manager, Davy Fitzgerald, made a quick start and points from TJ Reid, James Dowling and Charlie Carter put them into an early lead. The first of the goals also went the way of Jim Bolger’s Stars, Charlie Carter, hitting the net after some good work from ex Ireland Soccer International, Stephen Hunt.
Jockey Jamie Codd, registered Davy Russell’s Best’s first goal of the game when his deflected shot flashed past former Wexford goalie Damien
Martin Storey, captain of Wexford’s All Ireland-winning team in 1996, with current star Lee Chin, both representing Davy Russell’s Best.
