Lighthouse opens new Hook exhibition space
A NEW gallery exhibition space has been launched at Hook Lighthouse and Heritage Centre.
The gallery space opened with an exhibition from the award-winning Wexford based artist Martina Furlong. Martina paints abstracts and landscapes and works in oils and acrylics.
She said: ‘My landscapes are inspired by the beauty, ruggedness and magical quality of the Irish countryside.’
Mixing reality with memories and imagination, Martina said she paints her own interpretation of it. ‘I exaggerate colour, apply layer upon layer of paint, then work back into the surface with cloths, rollers, scrapers, plastic knives and twigs, as well as pallet knives and brushes to create heavily textured scenes.’
The Martina Furlong exhibition is the first in a series of month-long exhibitions planned for the space. Hook Lighthouse Manager of Ann Waters said: ‘For many years Hook Lighthouse has attracted artists who you will often find sitting painting along the shoreline and it also attracts visitors who appreciate art so we are delighted to open our gallery exhibition space not only for our visitors to enjoy but to also offer a platform to the very many talented artists in the South East and beyond.’
Hook Lighthouse and artist herself Anne Tweedy is curating the exhibitions. If you would like for your art to be considered for an exhibition, please contact Anne on 086 2341060 and email annetweedymolloy@gmail.com. Also see www.hookheritage.ie
