LOCAL SCHOOLS TO BENEFIT FROM RUN

- By DAVID LOOBY

THE Lake Region Medical Charity fun run, walk and family day in aid of the Our Lady of Fatima and Touching Hearts children’s schools took place recently at JFK Arboretum.

There was a great attendance on the day which included representatives from both schools, members of numerous running clubs and a huge number of public participants.

Proceedings got under way with sprint dashes for kids of all ages up to 12-years-old. A Lake Region spokesperson said: ‘ There was great determinatin and fun was had by all who took part with each child being presented with a medal and goodie bag as they crossed the finish line’.

There was lots of entertainment on the day including music by popular DJ entertainer Liam Sharkey, face painting by Craft Central, bouncy castles and even guest appearances from Disney characters such as Paw Patrol and the Minnions. Many children and families enjoyed the hot chocolate on route to finding the clues in the Treasure Hunt.

The timed run and walk then got under way following a few words from representatives from the charities Dermot Dooley from Touching Hearts and Rita Waters from Our Lady of Fatima. The 4.3 mile run was timed by United Striders Athletic Club (USAC) under the supervision of Catherine Ronan. The winner of the men’s race was Anthony Harper followed closely by Reuben Garcia-Urdangarin and Willie Foley. The winner of the women’s race was Benvon Lyons, followed by Helen Stafford and Catherine Redmond.

Once all of the runners and walkers had completed the course there was light refreshments served to all. Presentations were then made by members of the Lake Region Medical Charities Committee to the winners of the races, John Carroll of the OPW for hosting the event in JFK, Catherine Ronan of USAC and Michelle Synnott of Ballykelly Youth Club who helped out with the catering on the day.

‘A great day out was had by all at this annual charity event that seems to be growing year on year. All funds raised on the day will go a long way to the goal of raising €30,000 total to be split between both charities. Keep an eye out for the next Lake Region public fundraising event, which is a raffle including a signed Ireland rugby jersey which was kindly donated by Tadgh Furlong and is his game worn Ireland v France 14th cap jersey signed by the entire team. Tickets are on sale soon.’
