NEW ROSS
With the evenings closing in fast and visibility at a premium after sunset, all competitions for the winter season will be confined to 14 holes. In the first of these, which was of the stableford format, a big field of players took part in ideal weather conditions.
Heading the pack home in first place was Charlie Collins (18), with an excellent score of 31 points for the 14 holes played.
A point behind in the runners-up spot was Jim Byrne (10) with 30 points, whilst Michael Ryan Jnr. (+2) came third with 29 points after a countback over the last six holes. The gross prize went to Eamon Dungan with 24 points.
Category 1 saw Eddie Sweeney (8) take that prize with 28 points. In Category 2, Martin Carroll (15) was the winner with 29 points, and Eddie Kent (17) took Category 3 with 29 points also.
The new turkey competition is up and running over nine holes. For every 20 entries there is a turkey up for grabs just in time for Christmas. The entry fee is only €4 and you can re-enter for an extra €2. James or Paul in the Pro Shop will take the entries at all times during the week.
The novel Split The Pot fundraiser is going well and the latest winner was Declan Rowsome who took home €62.
All players are reminded to replace divots on the fairways and repair pitch marks on the greens which are in excellent condition, and it’s up to all to look after them.
NEW ROSS SENIORS
Well done Met. Eireann - you got the weather forecast spot on last Thursday with your prediction that any rain or drizzle would clear the south coast early and we would be left with a fine day. That is exactly the way it turned out, and our 14 teams enjoyed their game in perfect conditions, albeit the going was heavy underfoot.
We went with a champagne scramble format which is becoming increasingly popular in all clubs but especially with our Seniors’ brigade. It brings everyone into the game and is eminently suitable for the ageing profile, especially during the winter months. Weather conditions will dictate whether we should have that format every week from now until spring time.
Last Thursday saw some great scoring as no less than eleven teams broke the 90 points target and all enjoyed their game, figuring at different times on the scoresheet. But who forgot to put two of their team’s handicaps on the card - and how did that get past the scrutineer?
Taking first place, the whiskey and the bragging rights, were Tom Murphy (16), Billy Redmond (19), Mick Long (21) and Kenny Irwin (22) with a great score of 98 points.
Second with 96 points came Jim ‘Ross’ Ryan (17), Richie Aylward (19), John Joe Murray (20) and Jamesie Murphy (24). Third spot was filled by Willie Byrne (15), Hughie O’Connor (17), Richie Byrne (22) and Martin Hartley (23) with 95 points. Nearest the pin prizes went to Martin Hartley on the ninth hole and Aidan O’Connor on the eleventh.
Our A.G.M. is pencilled in for Thursday, November 30, at 8.40 a.m. sharp, and our Christmas outing and dinner is fixed for Thursday, December 7.
NEW ROSS LADIES
The year is slipping away fast! Last week we played the first of our Christmas competitions in some lovely sunshine after the very cold start.
These 14-hole events will continue until December, so get your name on the timesheet for next week.
November 8, 14-hole stableford: 1, Geraldine Mackey (12), 30 points; 2, Cathy Casey (29), 28 points; 3, Denise Bolger (16), 26 points.
The ladies’ section had its A.G.M. on Thursday, November 9. The meeting was opened by lady President Anne Curtis. Lady Captain Marie Therese Wall, after a very successful year at the helm, handed the mantle over to Maeve Wilson and her committee for 2018.
Marie Therese said great credit was due to the hard-working members who volunteered for the committee in 2017. The officers came in for special mention as well as the secretaries for competition and for handicap.
The sub-committee for handicaps was recognised for its contribution. The lady Captain conveyed her thanks to the ladies who were involved in representing the club as well as those who managed teams during the season for their generosity and dedication.
She went on to express her gratitude to sponsors who continue to support the club, thus ensuring its survival. She concluded by thanking the staff in the clubhouse and on the course for their unstinting efforts during their working hours.
The committee elected for 2018 included: Liz Roberts (lady President), Maeve Wilson (lady Captain), Marguerite Sutton (Vice-Captain), Mary Rose Ryan (Treasurer), Liz Bennett (Competition Secretary), Maria Burford (Handicap Secretary), Pat Purcell, Ellen Howlett, Teenie Murphy, Margaret Rossiter, Marie Therese Wall (ex-officio).
The winter league draw has been made and teams are posted in the locker room. There you will find your name and the dates for the first round.
This league will keep us focused on our golf for the winter months of November, December and January.
ROSSLARE
The turkey competitions continued in Rosslare on Sunday week with a team of three event. The winners were Rory Deane (5), Matty Grannell (10) and Paul Boggan (11) with 80 points, beating Eamonn Purcell (13), Joe Hudson (17) and Paddy McKiernan (23) on the breakdown.
Third on 79 points were Ger O’Reilly (12), Eamonn Mullan (17) and Tim Murphy (23).
Saturday turkey (16 holes): 1, Bob Quilty (10) ,Trevor Grehan (17), 41 points; 2, Seamus Edwards (10), Matty Grannell (10), 41 points.
Burrow twelve holes: 1, Tommy Boyce (18), 25 points; 2, Liam Davies (18), 24 points.
ROSSLARE LADIES
Tuesday, November 7, was the second 14-hole ladies’ singles stableford competition at Rosslare.
Despite playing winter golf, the weather was lovely - bright, dry and fresh. A total of 55 ladies played, competing for turkey vouchers (€25 in-house vouchers).
Well done to Anna O’Leary (18/14) who pipped Paula Stafford on the back seven with a score of 31 points. Well done to all six ladies who won a turkey voucher.
The Saturday ladies’ fourballs are as popular as ever, with 14 pairs playing on November 4. Congratulations to Angela Murphy and Máire Farrell who won with a score of 39 points and, as on Tuesday, claimed a turkey voucher each and a -1 reduction from their winter handicap.
Since Wednesday, November 1, we are now playing the winter course - the ladies’ red tees have been brought forward. Also, to protect the course, we have been asked not to bring our trolleys (or buggies) onto the aprons around the greens and to follow the directional signs on the course.
Tuesday, November 14, is another 14-hole ladies’ singles stableford competition starting on the third hole and finishing on the 16th hole. All the ladies are playing off their new 14-hole winter handicap - with twelve ladies taking an extra -1 off.

WEXFORD LADIES
Twenty-three ladies played in the Seniors’ competition held on Monday, November 6.
Results: 1, Una Seaver (32), 25; 2, Geraldine Draper (24), 23 (back six); 3, Margaret Hearne (16), 23.
Fifty-six played in the 14-hole singles stableford competition held on November 4 and 8.
Results: 1, Leonie Furlong (13), 30; 2, Madge Murphy (18), 28; 3, Cathríona Walsh (13), 27 (back seven).
Patricia Hillis (22) won the ten-hole competition with nine points. Nearest the pin was Margaret Hearne (16’ 8”).
On Wednesday, November 15, at 8.30 p.m. there is a table quiz in the clubhouse in aid of SERT (South East Radiotherapy Trust). SERT provides a daily voluntary transport service from Wexford to Whitfield Radiotherapy Clinic, Waterford.
There will be great prizes and a monster raffle, so come along and support this voluntary service. Wexford Cabs are providing a free taxi service home, within the boundary of the Ring Road, after the quiz.
Do not forget the A.G.M. of the ladies’ section will take place on Wednesday, November 22, at 7.30 p.m. in the clubhouse.
The executive committee have also called an E.G.M. for Monday, November 27, at 7.30 p.m. The purpose of the E.G.M. is to discuss the proposal for the future management of the club (including bar and catering facilities), excluding the course.
The decisions made at this meeting will impact on the future running of your club, and therefore your attendance and participation is very important.
