Player on crutches scored six goals

July 1992

Could it be possible that the new Lourdes will be situated on a Wexford GAA pitch? Like Eurodisney, it wouldn’t be quite the same as the real thing, but judging by recent events, a Gael-Lourdes could certainly deliver the goods.

Speculation abounds since the near miracle that occurred in Granstown GAA park when St. Anne’s played Bannow-Ballymitty in a juvenile hurling practice match.

Dedicated young St. Anne’s hurler, Colm Moore, struggled in on crutches following a recent cycling accident, but when he discovered his team had only 14 players, he insisted that he should play to make up the numbers.

Mentors reluctantly agreed that he could stand in while not actually taking part in the game… but there are now folk around the area who are still suffering lockjaw in amazement at what happened next.

He scored SIX goals and TWO points and hasn’t picked up his crutches since. Whether fame or pain was the spur to this extraordinary feat, or whether someone of divine authority just has a liking for a good game of hurling, no-one knows.

But it’s though that when word gets out, there’ll be people queueing up on the healing grass of Granstown, hoping for a miracle cure too.
