TWO New Ross area athletes, who trained together as children, are competing in the European championships this week.

Sprinter Sophie Becker, from Landscape, Ballykelly, and cyclist Mia Griffin, from Glenmore, are competing in Berlin and Glasgow respectively in the new look competition.

Sophie won her first silver medal in the National Athletics Championships in July in the 400m sprint with a time of 54.74.

She flies out to Berlin on Wednesday and is competing this Friday in the televised 400m relay race in her first senior race representing Ireland.

Mia has been training in Spain over the past year and is travelling to Glasgow to compete with the Irish cycling team. Mia will cycle with Hillary Hughes, Kelly Murphy, Alice Sharpe, and Orla Walsh in the Team Pursuit race.

Both women trained together with St Joseph’s AC when they were starting out on their fledgling careers and are now representing Ireland on the international sporting stage.
