A speeding caution for Commissioners

February 1998

-

Stating that Gorey is now only about an hour from Dublin could be seen as encouraging speeding on the roads.

That’s the view of Gorey Town Commissioner Michael Hobbs, who ticked off a fellow member for using the phrase at last week’s meeting of the Town Commissioners.

At one stage during the meeting, Cllr. Deirdre Bolger referred to the fact that a lot of commuters are now travelling from Gorey to Dublin, as the journey ‘only takes about an hour’. The new Arklow bypass will make the journey even quicker, she stated.

However, Cmmr. Hobbs advised his colleagues to be careful when saying Gorey is only an hour from Dublin. He said such an attitude was what was causing most of the accidents on our roads, as speeding is now listed as a worse cause of road carnage than alcohol.
