Minister James Browne TD, has welcomed new legislation aimed at preventing misue of quads and scrambler styled motorbikes.
In welcoming the measure Min Browne said the legislation is indicative of the Government’s determination to tackle anti-social behaviour in all forms including the misuse of MPVs.
In a statement made to this newspaper on Tuesday, Min Browne said: ‘Today, Cabinet has signed off on new legislation to prohibit the use of mechanically propelled vehicles on public or private land, except in certain circumstances such as farmland.’
‘We will also give greater power to An Gardaí Síochana to detain such a vehicle in a location when permission has not been provided by the landowner,’ said Min Browne.
‘Gardaí will also be able, on foot of a warrant, to enter private premises to remove a suspected vehicle,’ he added.
Min Browne recently chaired meeting of the Anti-Social Behaviour Forum and tasked the members to report back in four weeks time with the aim of submitting a report to the Government on further actions to take to support communities around the country.
‘In addition to this I will be publishing the new National Youth Justice Strategy in the coming weeks which will help young people in their communities,’ said Min Browne.
He said the Government is determined to support young people and communities around the country.
‘Today’s new legislation is needed,’ he said.
‘In the coming weeks we will see further community wide strategies to help communities as a whole beat anti-social behaviour.’
There have been issues in the past in Enniscorthy and across County Wexford regarding the misuse of quads and scramblers but not in recent months.
