Rosie and Venom reviewed; one more favourably than the other!
Dir: Ruben Fleischer. Starring: Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams. 15A 112M
e story goes that fans of Lady Gaga were swamping social media with negative reviews of Venom; the big movie that was opening up against their heroine’s debut feature. ey needn’t have bothered. Not only are fans of A Star is Born unlikely to be drawn to this yarn; Marvel fans may not be too keen either. While the character of Venom (an alien symbiote whose host is a hard-boiled TV reporter) is popular, and the cast (Hardy, Williams, Riz Ahmed) is stellar, the storyline is sheer hokum.
Even the most fantastical of movies need to be grounded in some reality. Once Venom has bonded with Tom Hardy and started conversing with his host, that all goes out the window. You get the impression that the lmmakers were a er a smart, deadpan, action-packed movie in the style of a Deadpool. Unfortunately, the action sequences are blurry and the humour is mostly of the unintentional variety (Venom giving Hardy relationship advice?). Not even the presence of the always excellent Hardy can save this one.
