To do this week
1 As hanging baskets start to fade, consider replanting with a mix of winter-flowering bedding such as Viola and evergreen foliage plants to add interest for the winter. 2 Biennials like wallflowers and foxgloves can be planted out now for a spring display. 3
Onion sets and shallots can be planted in drills for a crop next June. Use garden string when laying out the drills. 4
Plant spring cabbage now for a crop next April and May. Pigeons can be a problem, so use netting to stave off their predations. 5
Pot up herbs for use in autumn and winter. Keep them evenly moist in a bright porch or cold greenhouse.
