BLACK­AD­DER GOES FORTH (1988) It might seem odd to top this list with a com­edy, but this bril­liant se­ries cast an acer­bic eye on the life of the Tom­mie dur­ing World War I. The nal mon­tage, be­gin­ning with our he­roes go­ing over the top be­fore dis­solv­ing into a shot of a poppy eld, is a stand-out. BIRD­SONG (2012)

Se­bas­tian Faulks wrote one of the nest nov­els about WWI, and it be­came a BAFTA-win­ning minis­eries with Ed­die Red­mayne in the role of the British army lieu­tenant who re­calls mo­ments of love and war in the trenches of France. Clé­mence Poésy and Richard Mad­den co-star. PA­RADE’S END ( 2012- 2013)

This ve-part se­ries, based on the nov­els of Ford Ma­dox Ford, fol­lowed the for­tunes of peo­ple from di er­ent back­grounds through the War and be­yond. Bene­dict Cum­ber­batch headed a strong cast that also in­cluded Re­becca Hall, Fred­die Fox and Rufus Sewell. THE MONOCLED MUTINEER (1986) Alan Bleas­dale cre­ated this con­tro­ver­sial ac­count of the true-life gure of Percy To­plis, who led a British army mutiny dur­ing the First World War. Paul Mc­Gann took the lead role, with Cherie Lunghi and Ti­mothy in sup­port.
