FAM­I­LIES could knock as much as €4,000 a year off their pri­vate health in­sur­ance bill by switch­ing to cheaper — yet sim­i­lar — cover and in­sur­ing their chil­dren on less ex­pen­sive plans to the adults, an anal­y­sis by the health in­sur­ance ex­perts, To­tal­health­cover. ie and the Sun­day In­de­pen­dent has found.

So with this month mark­ing the be­gin­ning of a peak re­newal pe­riod for pri­vate health in­sur­ance — and price hikes of as much as 15pc on the cards for some con­sumers, it’s worth know­ing which plan could save you thou­sands by switch­ing — with­out sac­ri­fic­ing im­por­tant cover and ben­e­fits.

The Sun­day In­de­pen­dent lined up pri­vate health in­sur­ance ex­pert Der­mot Goode of To­tal­health­ to sug­gest a num­ber of pri­vate plans which could be worth mov­ing out of — and to rec­om­mend sim­i­lar, yet cheaper, al­ter­na­tives.
