There’s a lot of talk about spring coats around this time of year. Two things give us pause: a) Most come with cropped, bracelet-length sleeves that look nice, but are impractical for changeable weather like ours; and b) there are lots of things, such as a new pair of sandals, that we’d prefer to buy at this time of year. But there is something to be said for an outer layer for those occasions when a winter coat is too heavy, but a blazer seems not enough. A trench is perfect — it won’t date after one season, so we’re happy to spend a bit on it. Most high-street versions tend to either add bells and whistles or scrimp on the length — stay classic, at just above the knee. We love this simple stone-coloured version from Topshop, above, €102. It’s available in pink, too, although again, keep it classic — in this case, stick with beige.
