The gym bunnies of SoCoDu are loving Toss, the new “fresh food fast” salad bar in Blackrock, Co Dublin.
I’ve always been a sucker for salad counters when I’m on the road looking for a quick lunch fix, but my choices have always been disastrous petrolstation-quality combinations of thick, gooey tuna mayo and sinful slurps of egg mayo, piled high in a big, soft brown roll — the healthy option! Probably 1,000 calories a bite, even without the bottled smoothie!
Toss salad bar is owned by David Moore, above right, and Declan Cummins, while Gemma Hopkins, above left, is the nutritionist chef. At Toss, you choose your wrap, bread or salad bowl, your greenery, plus proteins from a wide selection of meats, prawns, eggs, avocado, as well as vegetables. You have to make a conscious choice as to what dressings you’re going to anoint your healthy food with, so you’re a little less likely to say, “I’ll have four tablespoons of mayo please!”
