I grew up being hauled by my mother out to Howth on Thursday evenings for a walk along the pier to buy fish direct from the boats. I can’t say the various fish on offer really did it for me back then, with their shiny skins and scary, staring eyes gazing up from the crates, while my mother trawled what was on offer and negotiated with the fishermen.
However, it’s funny how old habits die hard, and now, there’s nothing I love more than a spin along the coast to Howth, which is always bursting with atmosphere. There are, of course, lots of great restaurants there nowadays but, after a hike along the pier, our secret treat is a visit to Beshoff ’s for their fantastic scampi and chips at just €10.45.
We then scarper up to Howth Summit with our freshly cooked, piping-hot catch, lemon wedge and tartare sauce. Looking out over Dublin Bay, it’s better than being in Capri. See beshoffbros.com
