Oscar-winner calls it a Day

Sunday Independent (Ireland) - Living - - FRONT PAGE - JULIA MOLONY

He’s still six years too young to qualify for his free bus pass, but that’s not enough, apparently, to dissuade Daniel Day-lewis from taking early retirement. The three-time Oscar-winning actor announced last week that he’s quitting at the age of 60.

Maybe it was his family who nudged him into it, after all the years when Daniel went ‘Method’ on them. He’s married to the writer Rebecca Miller and they have three children between them. Did his kids watch aghast as Dad disappeared in front of their eyes only to be replaced by a Czech-speaking brain surgeon ( The Unbearable Lightness of Being) a bloodthirsty, squintyeyed psychopath ( Gangs of New York) or an apprentice shoemaker in Florence? Oh wait, that last one wasn’t a role but a sideline career Day-lewis took up while on sabbatical in 2008. Perhaps, in fact, he’s decided to go back to cobbling. Keep your eyes peeled for Day-lewis brogues popping up at a shoe store near you.
