Though it will be pure heresy to Trekkies, it must be noted that a size­able num­ber of peo­ple will want a look at this series to see An­thony Rapp, the ac­tor whose j’ac­cuse Tweet ear­lier this year set in mo­tion a chain of events which have all but ended the ca­reer of Kevin Spacey.

Rapp plays Lieu­tenant Paul Stamets, a char­ac­ter who, like Rapp him­self is gay. The ac­tor’s sober and muted per­for­mance fits with this som­bre ver­sion of Star Trek which heav­ily bor­rows from the vis­ual style of JJ Abrams’s re­booted Trek.

Star Trek: Dis­cov­ery is set 10 years be­fore Cap­tain Kirk and Mr Spock boldly went and ac­cord­ing to the show’s ex­ec­u­tive pro­ducer
