Leo: All work and some play

Sunday Independent (Ireland) - Living - - FRONT PAGE -

SOMEHOW, I doubt all work and no play will ever make Leo a dull boy. The 39-year-old leader of our nation loves Nick Cave, Blur, Grace Jones and dance music, adores the musical Hamilton, sings A Rainy Night in Soho by The Pogues as a party piece and wears Fred Perry shirts, for God’s sakes.

Still, Mr Varadkar should perhaps not take being the country’s coolest ever An Taoiseach for granted.

When I asked him, as I do, had he been up to anything of late, the Fine Gael leader replied, heartbreakingly for a social diarist: “Not much. Busy time of year.” Personally, I blame Theresa May for this cruel assault on Leo’s once vibrant social life. My spirit soon lifted, however, when Leo added: “I was at Tom Neville (a Fine Gael TD) and Jenny Dixon’s engagement party last Saturday in Lillie’s,” he said of the Fair City star’s betrothal beano in the Grafton Street nightclub last weekend.

“It was fun.” Our workaholic An T attended with his partner, Dr Matthew Barrett.

So, there you have it. Leo and Matt were at an engagement party. Sadly not their own. Yet. Also in attendance with Leo and Matt were Josepha Madigan, Colm Brophy and, said An T, “lots of Fair City people”.

Leo and partner Dr Matthew Barrett attended the glitzy engagement party of Jenny Dixon and Tom Neville
