Lough Boora, Co Of­faly Emerg­ing from a land­scape that un­til very re­cently was dev­as­tated by in­dus­trial peat har­vest­ing, the area around Lough Boora has been trans­formed into a recre­ational park­land. Na­ture has re­claimed the up­per hand re­mark­ably quickly, and wit­ness­ing the re­gen­er­a­tion first hand is a heart-warm­ing ex­pe­ri­ence. There’s a choice of five of­fi­cial walk­ing trails, rang­ing from 3km to 15km long. The 9km Mesolithic Route is per­haps the best, tak­ing you to a buried beach once dot­ted with stone-age hearths.
