Sunday Independent (Ireland) - Property - - SUNDAY PROPERTY - from Kevin Dennis of Cityscape Gardener

1 A garden needs a really well thought-out design plan — and unless you’re good at that, you will need to hire an experienced designer who will find out what you want and shape a plan around your needs.

2 Don’t be afraid of planting — a lot of people want low-maintenance gardens but plants aren’t high-maintenance once they are well-chosen. If you get the right designer and the plant choices are correct, everything is going to be OK.

3 If you’re planning a new garden, make sure you hire the best-quality contractor that you can get — and it’s not always about money. Read reviews, check their work, see if they are members of the Association of Landscape Contractors of Ireland. If you’re looking for a designer, check they are a member of Garden and Landscape Designers Association, what their credentials are, read reviews and even go and see their work.
