Southgate sweats on fitness of players

THE availability of Joe Gomez and Jack Wilshere is in doubt ahead of England’s Wembley friendly against Italy on Tuesday.

Less than three months before the World Cup gets under way, Jesse Lingard’s first international goal secured the Three Lions a deserved 1-0 win against the Netherlands in Amsterdam.

England manager Gareth Southgate learned a lot from a friendly that was just 10 minutes old when Liverpool defender Gomez’s second senior appearance was brought to a premature end through injury.

While it is understood that replacement Harry Maguire’s withdrawal late in proceedings was not a serious matter, Gomez’s injury is another headache for Southgate as he waits to see if Wilshere is available for England’s final friendly before naming his World Cup squad.
