Broadhurst eyes gold and European glory

Sunday Independent (Ireland) - Sport - - COMMENT -

DUNDALK lightweight Amy Broadhurst meets Francesca Martusciello in today’s European under 22 final in Targu Jiu, Romania with a gold medal firmly in her sights.

The Dealgan BC southpaw is eager to match Jason Quigley as the only Irish boxer to win gold at this level and has her eye on a unique hat-trick of European titles against the opponent she beat in the 2015 European Youth final.

The ex-European Junior and Youth champion and Roscommon middleweight Aoife O’Keeffe, who faces Turkey’s Busenaz Surmeneli, will, if they win this afternoon, cap Ireland’s best performance at this level.

In 2012, Quigley and Hughie Myers claimed gold and silver at the European under 22 championships in Russia.

Broadhurst and O’Rourke are the only Irish boxers left standing in Romania as the last of the four-strong male team, Gabriel Dossen, went out at the quarter-final stage on Thursday.
