Molloy and Afana­sev lead Elite Ir­ish charge

GAL­WAY wel­ter­weight Kieran Molloy and Dublin heavy­weight Kiril Afana­sev ad­vanced to the quar­ter­fi­nals of the Men’s Euro­pean Union Elite Cham­pi­onships on unan­i­mous and splits de­ci­sion in Valladolid, Spain yes­ter­day.

Molloy forced Bel­gium’s Ruben Ve­ci­unoa into a stand­ing count in the sec­ond round and dom­i­nated the 69kg con­test.

Afana­sev had his hands full with Slo­vakia’s David Michalek, but the Dubliner impressed with body shots in all three frames. The Slo­vak ral­lied late in the third be­fore the Ir­ish cham­pion was handed a 4-1 vic­tory.

Port­laoise light-wel­ter Wayne Kelly is in ac­tion to­day ver­sus Petr No­vak of the Czech Re­pub­lic look­ing to join Molloy, Afana­sev and Antrim ban­tam Kurt Walker in the last eight.

Ire­land oc­cupy No 1 spot in the all-time medals ta­ble at EU Cham­pi­onships with 35 medals.

Mean­while, Ire­land leave for the World Elite Women’s Cham­pi­onships in New Delhi, In­dia this morn­ing. Ceire Smith, Michaela Walsh, Kel­lie Har­ring­ton, Amy Broad­hurst, Grainne Walsh and Aoife O’Rourke rep­re­sented Ire­land at the 70-na­tion tour­na­ment. The boxing be­gins on Thurs­day.
