Molloy and Afanasev lead Elite Irish charge
GALWAY welterweight Kieran Molloy and Dublin heavyweight Kiril Afanasev advanced to the quarterfinals of the Men’s European Union Elite Championships on unanimous and splits decision in Valladolid, Spain yesterday.
Molloy forced Belgium’s Ruben Veciunoa into a standing count in the second round and dominated the 69kg contest.
Afanasev had his hands full with Slovakia’s David Michalek, but the Dubliner impressed with body shots in all three frames. The Slovak rallied late in the third before the Irish champion was handed a 4-1 victory.
Portlaoise light-welter Wayne Kelly is in action today versus Petr Novak of the Czech Republic looking to join Molloy, Afanasev and Antrim bantam Kurt Walker in the last eight.
Ireland occupy No 1 spot in the all-time medals table at EU Championships with 35 medals.
