Squeezed middle should get reward

Sunday Independent (Ireland) - - Letters -

Sir — Brendan Burgess (Sunday Independent, September 10) has popped his head over the parapet and simply stated what the dogs on the street (aka the squeezed middle) are saying every day to each other — reward work and reward efforts to get work.

Our family finances were devastated during the recession.

After a lifetime working, on losing my job I was entitled to just nine months of ‘dole’.

We scrimped and scraped, we took in a student, I did every course imaginable to make myself employable again and finally I am back in full-time work. Our son got his chosen course in college but we got no grant, because my wealthy ‘electrician’ husband was earning too much. I could go on, but I think you get the picture. Well said, Brendan. Mary Phelan, Limerick City
