Sir — There is much spec­u­la­tion a civil­ian may be con­sid­ered for the post of garda com­mis­sioner. In my opin­ion there can only be one man for the job — Michael O’Leary!

Can you imag­ine the trans­for­ma­tion he would lead? O’Leary would charge driv­ers to blow in the bag and charge dou­ble for a sec­ond bag. Gar­dai di­rect­ing traf­fic would also be given new garda lotto tick­ets to sell to mo­torists. And what about the ad­ver­tis­ing op­por­tu­ni­ties on garda pa­trol cars?

Us­ing his Ryanair ex­pe­ri­ence, he would charge phone calls to the gar­dai at a pre­mium rate and push all con­tact on­line. He would end garda al­lowances — and in­stead of a uni­form al­lowance, gar­dai would have to lease their uni­form monthly from him, gen­er­at­ing a new stream of rev­enue that would fund the mar­ket­ing bud­get
