A JOINT operation between gardai and American Homeland Security has led to the seizure of three Glock handguns from packages being sent to Ireland from the US.

The automatic weapons were due to be delivered to addresses in Dublin city and county when they were intercepted and seized by United States Homeland Security Investigations.

Special Crime Operations gardai followed up the firearms seizure by carrying out searches at properties in Stepaside, Carrickmines and Newcastle, Co Dublin, last Friday in connection with the discovery of the guns in the US.

This led to the discovery and seizures of cocaine and cannabis in Dublin.

Three people, aged 26, 27 and 38 were arrested and taken to separate Garda stations in the east of Dublin city.

They were released yesterday without charge and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

A Garda spokeswoman said the investigation is continuing with the support of special agents from the US.
