Let’s wake up from this US nightmare
Sir — I once fell in love with a beautiful, intelligent, exotic creature named America. Years passed — she changed and we no longer share values in common. She has become angry, debased, small-minded, and hypocritical. I no longer recognise her and am simultaneously disappointed, ashamed, and embarrassed.
Trump’s petulant Man-Baby Presidency will either be a wake-up call, or the final straw for a broken nation. He has normalised abnormal behaviour and the leadership that follows is likely to be even more bizarre, extreme and unwholesome. The damage inflicted will take decades to repair and much is irreversible. The culture wars are finally over — idiocracy has won!
Sadly, anyone who believes the Democrats will save them from an unhinged president, or the excesses of the Republican faithful, may yet receive a rude awakening.
Democracy is dead in America, as in many other nations. The people’s only power now comes as consumers, not voters. There is but one political party with different branches — most of which are creations of the ‘establishment’ elite. Every few years the inmates of our unsustainable economic system are permitted the humiliating deception of choosing the next leaders who have been shortlisted for us by the banks, big corporations, and wealthy campaign donors. The 1pc ensure their placement/woman wins and the rest of us lose.
Trump is not the problem, but merely a symptom, who conveniently fills a cancerous void at the heart of his nation.
Americans need to look in the mirror to see the real enemy who has enabled a dysfunctional system to cripple a once great country by electing an ignorant, misogynist into the White House.
Climate change, overpopulation, and inequality are now the principal drivers in our society (both the USA and Ireland). Any true leader would demand to make our environment great again. The choice now is either ditch unsustainable capitalism and save the earth, or rescue capitalism and dump the planet.
If ever there was one country where utopia could have been realised it had to be America. Wake up everyone, we can all do better than this. Ted Newcomen, Chestertown, Maryland, US
