McCarthy mix-up

Sunday Independent (Ireland) - - Letters -

Sir — Colm McCarthy (Sunday Independent, October 7) is seemingly suggesting, that by virtue of common UK membership, the concessions afforded the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands by the EU could be transposed to Northern Ireland post-Brexit.

Notwithstanding the fact that they are both Crown Dependencies, with British citizens who are entitled to British passports, neither the Isle of Man nor the Channel Islands are part of the UK, and to compound matters are not in the EU either, a situation which debarred them from participating in the Brexit referendum.

Colm will need to cast his net further afield for concessionary examples suitable for Northern Ireland, as none currently exist in the UK. B Robinson, Daingean, Co Offaly
