BRIDGE

- John Comyn

NO news is good news, but there is still a great anxiety to return to normal whenever that is possible. Nothing is happening just yet, although you can get your hair cut tomorrow.

Quite a number of you feel the powers-that-be should play something national like the IBU club pairs on BBO.

There are plenty of very capable people out there who would make a success of one or more events.

Anyway it is well worth some discussion since no matter how well Eamon Galligan and company are keeping the flag flying it just isn’t the same thing.

The recent Dun Laoghaire Open over two days went off very well which only goes to show what is possible.

Numbers have been dropping in recent weeks. I’m not sure why, although it could be that there is not quite the variety of events morning, afternoon and night, so that might explain it.

High-level pre-empts tend to cause problems, especially when a partner has a good hand and is sorely tempted to keep going. Here is one from the Bridge Centre teams.

West should pass since 4S denies an outside ace so two heart losers are almost certain.

But then you have optimists and pessimists at every table.
