North East Runners excel in local races
NORTH East Runners took part in two major local races last weekend, excelling in both the Dromiskin 5k and MCI Marathon and Half Marathon.
Many member turned out in the black and white for the Dromiskin 5k to support local athletic club, St. Peter’s, and in particular their mentor and fellow North East Runner, Simon Allen.
This year was the fourth running of the race that was organised first by the community group Dromiskin Fit Club and more recently by St. Peter’s and local GAA club St. Joseph’s.
With a top class field (men’s winner Darragh Greene crossed the line in 14:59 while ladies’ winner Michelle Finn won with a time of 16:45) it was a fantastic race for NER runners with members claiming both team prizes as well as some fine individual performances.
Fresh from his PB in Carlingford 5k last month, Niall Fergus led the men’s team home finishing 7th overall in 16:42. Liam Fergus, Barry Meegan and Stephen Mullholland finished in the top 15 to beat Dunleer AC to the team title. There were many strong individual runs on this fast course – none more so than Colm Fergus who claimed third place in his age category.
The ladies team of Laura Mathews, Anita Bolton, Zara Nevin and Bernadette Muckian claimed the top spot beating Drogheda & District by a comfortable margin. The effervescent Bolton stormed home in 21:37 to claim second place in her age category for good measure.
On Sunday morning, marathon queen Colette O’Hagan organised the second running of the Marathon Club of Ireland (MCI) Dundalk Half and Full Marathon. Fittingly, this year’s race was dedicated to the memory of two great North East Runners members, Joe Kirk and Andy Califf who sadly passed away in the last year.
A huge contingent turned out to test themselves on this gruelling course but also to show their respect for two gentlemen who left lasting impression on many in the club. There were wins on the half marathon course for two NERds with Maurice McMahon winning the men’s race and Laura Mathews taking the ladies title.
September continues to be a busy month with many local races to choose from. This week the Friary Girls NS host the second running of their 5k race, while Blackrock AC host the Stephen Carroll/Capt. Mark Dufffy 4 mile road race on the 22nd of September. Finally St. Vincent’s Secondary School round the month off with their own 5k race on the 28th.
