DkITSU join ‘Raise the Roof’ protests

DkIt Stu­dents Union were among the 10,000 who protested in Dublin last week as part of the na­tional ‘Raise the Roof ’ cam­paign on the hous­ing cri­sis.

The huge rally saw pro­tes­tors from a range of sec­tors, char­i­ties and vol­un­tary bod­ies across the coun­try, in­clud­ing stu­dent rep­re­sen­ta­tive groups.

Maria Maguire, DkIT Stu­dentsa Union Pres­di­ent ex­plained: ‘We marched for the hous­ing cri­sis and stu­dent hous­ing cri­sis to be rec­og­nized by gov­ern­ment and not to be brushed off any­more. We marched to try in­flu­ence a de­bate in the Dáil on whether or not to de­clare the hous­ing cri­sis a na­tional emer­gency.’

She added that pro­tes­tors wel­comed the vote to ‘de­clare this cri­sis an emer- gency de­spite op­po­si­tion from gov­ern­ment TDs.’

‘ The stu­dents of DkIT and Ire­land along with other mem­bers of so­ci­ety were lis­tened to. This is a small win in a very big bat­tle for so­cial jus­tice but a cru­cial win for the fu­ture of Ire­land.’
