CCTV cameras are a ‘powerful deterrent’
A drug deal caught live on the garda monitored CCTV camera led to an arrest and a person being brought to court, members of the Dundalk Joint Policing Committee heard last week.
Chief Supt Christy Mangan also revealed that the presence of CCTV cameras also helped gardai solve a serious crime which they wouldn’t have been able to do without CCTV. While not elaborating on the incident, he said it was ‘a nasty crime’.
He acknowledged the importance of CCTV cameras in preventing crime and also in bringing about prosecutions. ‘It’s a powerful deterrent.’
A call had been made at the meeting for a CCTV scheme for Carlingford to help combat the on going problem with anti social behaviour at the weekends.
Cllr John McGahon noted that community CCTV schemes had been discussed at previously there were issues around GDPR. The community CCTV schemes were not fully funded, with communities having to put up 40% of the capital cost. The running costs of the scheme are met by the local authority,
