Rafferty the star as United conquer Quay
QUAY CELTIC BELURGAN UNITED 2 3
BELLURGAN made a bright start and none more so than the brightest player on the pitch Gerry Rafferty who inspired his side to victory with a brace of goals and a veritable jack in the box display in this U13 encounter at Clancy Park.
He broke clear of the Quay defence and with only a minute gone and angled a perfect shot into the bottom corner of the net from inside the penalty box.
Quay took only a few minutes to draw level when Tom Dearey’s corner eluded goalkeeper and defenders alike on the Bellurgan goal line.
Although against the wind Quay had the better of the attacking play in the opening half, and the visitors’ goalkeeper Jamie Burns pulled off three crucial saves.
The first with his outstretched foot enabled his side to regain the lead on eight minutes, when Niall Morgan curled a great freekick from outside the penalty box into the corner of the net.
A sweet move then resulted in the ball breaking off a defender to Rafferty who dragged his shot wide from inside the penalty box with only home goalkeeper Artus Dauginitis standing in his way.
Before that Shay Downey for Quay was foiled by Burns who excelled twice more before he was left helpless by a high shot by Shay Quinn from outside the box as it flew in underneath the crossbar in the dying seconds.
The momentum appeared now with Quay who also had the wind in their favour, but like in the first half Rafferty gave his side back the impetus scoring a terrific second goal and what turned out to be the winner after six minutes.
It was similar but more spectacular to his first as he raced free and his finish was emphatic bent over and wide of the diving goalkeeper.
Quay never really threatened after that with Rafferty dropping back into mid-field and dictating play with his fast elusive dribbling and perceptive passing.
Quay had two late opportunities, the best of which Conal Courtney steered wide from in front of goal from a cross by Dearey.
